What do I do in case of emergency?

How do I give information about an offence or an accident?

  • Inform the police by calling the district police control room on 100.

  • Go to the nearest police station and inform the SHO (Station House Officer) in charge.

What should I do in case of an accident?

  • Give first aid to the injured.
  • Try to secure medical help immediately by calling 108 for an ambulance or by taking the injured to the nearest hospital in any vehicle available. You will not be involved in any accident case by helping the victims.
  • Inform the police (as explained above).
  • Note the details of the accused (name, phone number, address, photo, description) and the accused vehicle (registration number, type of vehicle, colour, direction headed) and inform the police of the same.
  • Ensure people do not attack the accused or set fire to the accused’s vehicle.
  • Do not stand around, creating unnecessary crowding on the road.

How can I help a child in distress?

  • Call 100.
  • Call Makkala Sahayavani (child helpline) on the toll free number 1098.
  • Inform the nearest police station.

How can I help a woman in distress?

  • Call 100.
  • Call Vanitha Sahayavani (woman helpline) on the toll free number 1091.
  • Inform the nearest police station.

 How do I register a complaint?

  • Visit the nearest police station.
  • Give a complaint in writing to the SHO (Station House Officer) with all the relevant details. Else inform the SHO orally, who will reduce the complaint to writing and read it over to you.
  • Sign the complaint.
  • If the complaint reveals a cognizable offence under the Indian Penal Code, an FIR - First Information Report - will be registered. The SHO will provide you a copy of the FIR free of charge.
  • If the complaint reveals a non-cognizable offence, the SHO will take the permission of court to register an FIR. The SHO will provide you acknowledgement of the complaint in Form 76A.

How do I get acknowledgement for lost documents/mobile phone?

  • Visit the nearest police station.
  • Submit a complaint as explained above. Due acknowledgement will be given for the same.

 How do I obtain Police Clearance Certificate (PCC)?

  • Visit the SP Office and fill up the given form with your required particulars. Submit the application along with copies of proof of residence of one year, identification proof and proof of date of birth as well as three passport-sized photos. A bank challan receipt for Rs XX should also be attached to the application.
  • An enquiry regarding your antecedents will be conducted by the local police.
  • The PCC may be collected from the local police station after a period of 21 working days (provided local enquiry is done in time).
  • Organizations can also submit application in bulk at the SP office.

 How is Passport Verification done?

  • After you submit your application at the Regional Passport Office or Passport Seva Kendra, your application is forwarded to the SP Office for verification.
  • The application is immediately sent to the local police for checking of antecedents.
  • The local police officer will visit your house to conduct the enquiry.
  • Once the local police report is received at the SP Office, it is forwarded to the RPO for further action.
  • Verification by the police is done within a period of 21 days, provided local enquiry is done in time.
  • You are not required to pay any money to the police for verification. If any police personnel make a demand for money, submit a complaint at the nearest police station or contact concerned officers by phone.

What documents should I carry while driving?

  • You must carry your driving license, registration certificate, insurance certificate, emission certificate and taxation certificate in original. In case of transport vehicles, fitness certificate and permit should also be kept.

Who is authorized to collect spot fines for traffic violations?

  • Any police officer of the rank of police Sub-Inspector (two stars) and above may impose traffic fines.
  • However, an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of traffic police (one star, white shirt) and ASIs deputed for duty in Highway Patrol vehicles are also empowered to fine motorists.
  • No police constable or head constable is authorized to impose fines.
  • Insist on written or printed (in case of BlackBerry) receipt for the fine paid.
  • If denied a receipt, submit a complaint to the nearest police station or contact concerned police officers by phone.

What happens if I refuse to pay spot fine for traffic violation?

  • You will be issued a notice to appear in court on the next working day.
  • A stiffer penalty may be imposed in court.
  • If you do not appear in court, a warrant will be issued, leading to arrest and higher penalty.

How can I volunteer my services Police?

  • Contact your nearest police station to enroll as a Beat Committee Member for your local area to offer your invaluable cooperation to local police. You will be put in touch with your local Beat Constable, whom you may contact in case of any need
